Singing Lessons for Children

Teaching Children to Sing is Sharon’s passion. Children learn differently to Adults and often learn quicker. They also are more sensitive to the Teacher – Student relationship. This means that she has an approach of  “never say No” and “don’t say don’t”. Positive re-enforcement ensure that younger students don’t feel intimidated or threatened, by the teacher.

Singing Lessons with Sharon involve –
Embracing their voice. Younger students voices will change, boys and girls will experience changes in the way they sound, and the tones that they have. Their range will change and it important that they understand how singing should “feel” and what “feelings” in their throat will cause / develop problems as a singer. Singing should be easy, and feel easy without strain or effort.
The other part is Fun. Singing is definitely Fun, and is to be enjoyed. Doing something you love and brings you pleasure, makes learning a breeze.
Part of learning is still work and requires effort, but presenting it in such a way that it feels more like fun, than work will help lessons go smoother. Sharon has taught children will different needs and abilities, including some with some disabilities. Every child is unique and requires an adaptive approach to the lesson. Re-acting to how the child re-acts to exercises and direction is part of Sharon’s approach. She looks forward to challenge and rewards that children bring.

Singing Lessons – Teach me to teach you

There are many techniques out there on offer, each of which has something to offer. Students need to ensure that they are assessing their teachers while they are learning, or have Mum or Dad attend the lesson to ensure that they are comfortable with what is asked of them in the lesson.

Shyness or awkwardness can limit the students progress and we need to ensure that they are not feeling pressured. A great singing technique should teach you how to make your voice function in a natural and efficient way. When you (or your child) are singing it should be easy. 

Feedback from the student is important to help us help you. We want to know how you are going and progressing.

At every Singing Lesson, there will be a method applied to structure the lesson;
  1. Assess – Diagnoses of you personal vocal needs
  2. Direct  – Exercises selected according to the cause and effect principle to direct the lesson to what you need in your voice
  3. Apply – An application of those techniques to a song of your choice
1. Vocal Assessment

In the first Singing Lesson, Sharon will ask to you to sing and will listen to your voice. She may then ask you to sing some scales to see how your voice reacts at different notes. This will then allow her to understand the different parts of your voice.

2. Give Direction

This is where you will do some scales, these serve to analyse your voice, and some exercises that may remedy the part of your voice that needs attention.
The exercise for children are often disguised as games or singing numbers, or just be an exercise.

3. Application in a Song

The fun part, singing a song, whilst applying what has been learnt during the “direction”. This is where you will see whether it made a difference.
The difference may be subtle, but may eliminate any hoarseness they may have had, or soreness after singing may be gone.
